The Muncy Luminary

Thursday, April 25, 1912

The new residence being erected by Charles Metzger, on North Main street, when completed will be one of the finest homes in Muncy.

Miss Margaret Bair, a law student at Dickinson College, Carlisle is here for a short visit with her father, Newton Bair.

An old land mark, the big maple tree in front of the Thorn Brewer property on Main street, has been taken down. It measurers more than 5 feet in diameter, and required eight hours to remove the stump and haul it away.

Thursday, April 23, 1903

James Mulligan, while assisting in moving Silas Renn's house met a painful accident on Saturday. He was prying up a jack when a rope broke and a piece of wood which was attached to it flew up and struck him, severely cutting and bruising his face.

Jack Sanders, while repairing a deep cistern at the home of S.D. Heller Monday, lost his balance and fell into the cistern. He was rescued by several persons, and was somewhat bruised and cut.

John Tallman and son have moved their livery stable from the Coulter & Bowman building into Dr. C.W. Holley's Barn, which was remodeled for that purpose.

Thursday, April 22, 1937

Mrs. Elsie Caldwell, of this place, and Albert A. Swartz, of Williamsport, were united in marriage Saturday.

Miss Althea Brelsford entertained at a dinner and shower, last week, at the Village Tea Room in Williamsport, in honor of Miss Hulda Dimm's approaching marriage.

Died: H.G. Phillips, aged 67, founder of the H.G. Phillips Supply House died at his home in Williamsport at 6:52 last evening; William Metzger, of Ohio, brother of Burgess Charles A. Metzger, of this place, died about 3 o'clock yesterday morning; Amanda C. Vanderbilt, 88, died Sunday even at the home of her son, Boyd, on South Market street, from a stroke which she suffered on Friday evening; Lloyd D. Marr, of Turbotville, R.D., died last Friday afternoon at 5:30 o'clock, after a week's illness which followed a stroke; Emma Nelson, aged 86, of West Penn street, died last night at the home of her sister, Mrs. Henry Nelson, on West Water street.

Mrs. Sterling Herr, 48-year old lifetime Muncy resident until her family moved to Anchorage, Alaska, several years ago, was instantly killed in Alaska in an automobile accident.

Muncy shared top billing with S. Williamsport at the annual West Branch Athletic Conference banquet Monday in Williamsport, as MHS received the trophy emblematic of the wrestling championship, while South received two-basketball and football.

Just to prove how truly "chipper" she was on her 98th birthday, Mrs. Sallie Crawford parked her aluminum walker at the top of a flight of steps at the Muncy Valley hospital on Tuesday and walked down unassisted to the first landing!

Announcement was made of the marriage of Miss Jane Rider, of near Unityville, and Joseph Sinsabaugh, of Hughesville, on Feb. 24.

Died: Bertha M. Mader, of Muncy, died after an illness of eight months; Bertha Marr, of Muncy, died Feb. 25.

Area resident serving our country: Pvt. E-2 Ryan C. Manthey, a 2001 graduate of Montgomery Area High School, is the son of Lisa and Greg Manthey, Montgomery.

The crocus kept their petals tightly closed in Lairdsville Monday morning after a smattering of snow fell the previous afternoon.

Finding Me on the Map was easy for the first grade classes in Muncy. AFter learning about maps in reading, they created maps and found their way to The Luminary office.

"Timberwolf Tracks", a history of the 104th Infantry Division during World War II., was written by Albert Stover of Clarkstown.

The engagement of Heidi Dawn Leob of Hummelstown, to Kevin Lee Young of Camp Hill.

Former Muncy man, Jack Soler, an Allentown diver, has been ducted into the PA Swimming Hall of Fame located at Penn State's McCoy Natatorium.

The candlelight wedding ceremony of Alana Lynn Minnig to Jason Scott Gresh took place on Dec. 22 in Pennsdale.

Died: Maggie A. Calkins, 39, of Picture Rocks, died March 10; Barry R. Newton, 45, formerly of Montgomery, died March 15; E. Louise "Petie" Waltman, Williamsport, died March 15;
