After retirement, he volunteered at Greenwood Friends School for several years emphasizing, through historic figures, the importance of heroes in our lives. Teaching was his great love.

He was also an avid sports fan, with a love for the New York Yankees in particular. His nickname "Mick" was a result of his emulating Mickey Mantle when he was a young boy.

In 1995, Mick married Drue Magee and her two sons, Justin and Stephen Hummel joined them in Bloomsburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents; as well as his sister, Sandy Lance, and her infant daughter, Sarah.

In addition to his wife and their sons, Justin Hummel, his wife, Megan, and sons, Dylan and Jackson Sorber, and Stephen Hummel and his wife, Ashley, Mick is survived by his nephew, Josh Lance, his wife, Kelly and his niece, Katie Lance Roberts, her husband, Scott and their children Amelia and Andrew.

His survivors also include his aunt and uncle, Marcy and Howard Kremser, of Montoursville.

Mick was fortunate enough to grow up in a wonderful neighborhood in Hughesville where his father's siblings all shared backyards in a one block area. His surviving cousins are thus, as close as siblings.

Mick was diagnosed in 1977 with MS. For the past 18 years he was proud to sponsor a golf tournament to raise money for MS research, raising over $200,000 during its history. He was grateful to his many friends who participated in this effort!

Mick spent three years of his most recent life at Muncy Valley Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit where he was well liked and well cared for and about.
