Spartans defeat rival Muncy

The Hughesville defense made a total of 19 tackles for either no gain or a loss last Friday night while shutting out the Indians, 21-0. With the win the Spartans secured a spot in the District 4 Class AA playoffs and will travel to top-seeded Southern Columbia as the eighth seed this Friday night.

Nick Yeager scored all three of Hughesville’s touchdowns – two rushing, one receiving. Hughesville’s first score came when quarterback Logan Henry hit Nick Yeager with a 41-yard touchdown pass. Yeager finished off a 36-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run, and added his third touchdown on a 1-yard run on fourth down following Clint Snyder’s 73-yard run in the second half to give the Spartans a 21-0 lead.

The defense stopped Muncy’s running and passing game. The Indians had just 55 yards of offense at halftime, and prior to its final two drives of the night, that number was knocked down to 35 in the second half.

Of Muncy’s 39 rushing attempts, 15 ended in tackles for loss. Running back Dakota Nixon, was held to just 31 yards on 18 carries. As a team, Muncy ran for just 40 net yards on 39 attempts.

South Williamsport 69, Montgomery 20

South Williamsport dominated the Red Raiders last Friday night in Montgomery, 69-20, as the Mounties senior running back set a new record in Lycoming County.

Dominick Bragalone needed 176 yards on the ground to break the county’s career rushing record of 6,771 yards, which was set by Williamsport’s Darrell Blackman from 2000-2002. Bragalone ended the game with five touchdowns and 230 yards. His final carry put him at 2,794 rushing yards on the season and 6,825 career rushing yards, breaking Blackman’s record by 54 yards. He also earned career touchdowns Nos. 100, 101, 102, 103 and 104.

Quarterback Matt Boone also broke a record when he reached 1,000 yards passing this season and breaking the South Williamsport single season touchdown passes record (16).

The Montgomery offense scored their first points in the first half when Zach Shadle returned a kick 92 yards with a minute left in the second quarter. In the fourth quarter, Shadle scored again when running 63-yards up the right side of the field. He finished with 68 yards and ended his season with 1,068 yards and owns the record in Montgomery with most rushing yards in a season.
