Hughesville Locals Oct. 4, 2017

October 4, 2017
By NANCY HODGE , The Luminary

The summer-long construction project to rebuild and pave Water Street from Main Street to the Muncy Creek Bridge is complete and open to all regular traffic. It's a great improvement, although it doesn't appear to be any wider than before, so I still will avoid Water Street whenever I am on my bicycle! The opening came just in time for the beginning of true autumn weather. What a quick change we had from 90+ degrees to overnight temps in the 40's! In a few months, 40 degrees will seem mild, I'm sure, but it caught me by surprise over the weekend when there was frost on my car windshield. Another surprise was the brief, but welcomed rain shower on Friday evening. Things had become so dry with the extreme heat that some of my flowers were rather wilted. They have perked up now, and I hope they will have a while to bloom before a hard frost occurs.

This first weekend of October will feature some local fund-raising with the annual Yard Sale at the East Lycoming Historical Society museum at 66 S. Main. I know that the recent devastating hurricanes in Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico have caused many local churches and other organizations to ask for monetary donations, so many of us are feeling "stretched", but I urge you to check out the many items that will be offered at the museum. You may find that you can satisfy some of your gift list for the Christmas season and help support this wonderful local treasure at the same time. Mid-month the ELHS will sponsor a fun evening when they have Michael Callahan, appraiser and antiques dealer, on hand for an "Antiques Roadshow" type event. For a donation of five dollars, you can have your favorite item valued and critiqued.

HHS Fall Sports teams are still competing in regular season games and matches. The Varsity football team will have home games this week and next, and will close their season with the annual Muncy game on Oct. 27. The Boys' Soccer team will be doing a lot of travelling, with five away games in the next two weeks and one home game on the 16th. The Girls' Soccer team will have a few Away games and three Home games on the 12th, 17th, and 19th. The Girls' Tennis Team will begin District competition for both Singles and Doubles on the 10th, and the Co-Ed Cross Country team has regular meets on the 10th and 12th, both Away, and the District Event on Oct. 26. Make your plans now to go out and cheer for the Spartans!
