Hughesville Locals

It is the feast day of Saint Nicholas (Dec. 6) and last Sunday was the first of the four Sundays of Advent, when Christians begin the time of preparation for Christmas. The festive days of Christmas, and the celebration of the beginning of a new year are just a few weeks away. While there are many folks who are well organized and who have most of their holiday preparations complete (or so they would have us believe!) I am on a different plane. I have done some shopping, and have many plans to bake, write a marvelous Christmas letter that gets mailed by mid-month, and to decorate the house from stem to stern with tasteful, traditional, coordinated lights and displays. You can guess the usual outcome. However, I am hopeful! Someday it might actually happen!

Many things are happening here in Hughesville. The high school and elementary choruses will present concerts that include songs of many styles and feature many talented students. Winter sports teams will be competing in basketball, wrestling, swimming, and indoor track. Check the schedules and enjoy the performances of the student-athletes. Elementary students are also participating in winter sports. One of my favorite December school events is the Jr/Sr Class Play. This year's play is "The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon," which promises to be a romping good time! The students work diligently to make sure you will enjoy your evening. Mark your calendar for this year's production and relax as you indulge in some live theater.

Did you see the "Super" moon last weekend? On Saturday evening it was so bright that my flashlight was almost unnecessary when I was out walking our dog. If you didn't notice the larger than usual size (due to the coincidence of the full moon coming at the same time as the moon's closest approach to Earth), you will have another two chances soon. Both Jan. 2 and Jan. 31 will be full moon dates, and both will be classes as Super.

I hope that the sky will be clear so we can enjoy the "Super Blue Moon" on the 31st!

Make sure you drive through the downtown section of Hughesville and see how nice it looks with the decorations provided by the local merchants, the Rotary Club, and the borough. I am really proud of how nice our community looks!
