Hughesville Locals Aug. 1, 2018

August 1, 2018
By NANCY HODGE , The Luminary

Time has marched along and we have come to August! It seems just a week or so ago I was preparing for July 4th, and now we are in the last month of summer. It's been a frustrating time at home with several appliances deciding that they want some attention and causing extra steps and extra expense. It will all work out, but I wish they would do this sort of thing one at a time!

Something new in Hughesville is The Beacon. Bethany and Christ Methodist churches have been in the process of a merger for the past few years, and they are in the final stages. There has been a large renovation project going on at the church on Main Street which will house the blended congregation and the pre-school which has been at Bethany for 20 or so years. Worship services have been held at Bethany, on Second Street, but I understand that the new worship space is undergoing the final floor finishing and placement of accessories. Watch for announcements about new worship schedules and location!

The Beacon, and the Hughesville populace, welcome Rev. Anne Runnels, Interim Pastor, who will shepherd the congregation as they begin their new worship life. She will be in our midst for a year, so make sure to get a chance to meet and greet her.

School will begin in the East Lycoming School District on August 23, so there are just three weeks left for all those summer activities. Students will begin athletic and band "camp" very soon.

I hope all our readers had very little serious impact from the excessive rainfall and resultant flooding last week. I know there were some folks who had water in their homes. I hope everyone's recovery is going smoothly and quickly. It is an exhausting job to clean up after water-damage. While our yard was more like a pond, we were fortunate that none of the water went into our basement, so I felt blessed. However, Fifth Street had to be closed for awhile. I hope the soil will have time to dry out before any more drenching rains arrive.
