Muncy Locals Aug. 8, 2018

August 8, 2018
By BARBARA C. BARRETT , The Luminary

I am glad the weather held out for Saturday's Pops on Pepper Street for the outdoor symphony concert in Muncy, especially after Friday's heavy rainfall. Some of the areas were roped off due to soggy ground, but for the most part, the orchestra was able to get set up in a dry area and everyone brought chairs and found a good spot to sit back and relax to an hour of splendid music. The sun was shining and we watched the sun set behind the orchestra. There was plenty of parking and the Muncy Historical Society almost ran out of popcorn.

Today there will be an open house for the new adult day service in Muncy. Liberty Manor is located on Ashler Manor Drive just off John Brady Drive in Muncy Township. If you are a caretaker, this is a place you can bring an older adult during the day who needs supervised care, so you can leave home or take care of yourself for awhile.

As many of you have, I received my notice on a nice card in the mail for the annual Senior Expo coming up in September. There is a new location this year and our local representatives, Garth Everett and Sen. Gene Yaw who are sponsoring it, said they searched for awhile to find a place for the event. It will be held at the Lycoming Valley Baptist Chuch on Lycoming Mall Drive. There are two things to be aware of in advance. First, there will be a workshop on crime prevention, especially for the aging population, and that includes myself. There are so many scams out there, and we need to be more aware of them. My husband almost was caught in a scheme through a caller on his cell phone. He said they sounded so credible. Many of these scams are financial fraud targeted to older Americans. If you are going to invest money, be sure to do a background check on the investment company. You can do this by calling 800732-0330 or visit SEC's investor.gov. A representative from the PA General Attorney's office will be on hand at the senior expo, and a pre-registration is required for for the crime prevention workshop by calling 327-2084.

Secondly, now is the time to start collecting old medications and OTCs that are expired or no longer being used. We are remodeling our bathroom at home and will be replacing the storage cabinet. Before disposing the old cabinet, I found plenty of old creams, expired pain relievers and medications to bring with me to the expo for the MedReturn box. Look for it at the County Sheriff's table.
