Enlightening Items from old Luminarys

1868

A barn in Jersey Shore belong to John S. Tomb, Esq., was destroyed by fire on Sunday morning, doing considerable damage to the corn crop.

A horse belong to Rev. S. W. Zeigler of Lewisburg, strayed away from the premises of D.D. Manville in this Borough, on Sunday night week.

During the thunderstorm on Sunday last, a barn belong to Samuel Glick in Buffalo township, was struck by lightning and consumed.

1893

A young man named Haupt, the new clerk at Rankin's Drug Store, was overcome by the heat Saturday last and was quite ill during Saturday and Sunday.

Miss Lizzie Wolf of Reading is visiting her aunt, Mrs. William Wood.

Miss Martha Schuyler, now visiting the World's Fair, sent each member of her family a souvenir postal card on July 4 representing the departments she was visiting.

Mr. Frank Shaffer who died recently was the first soldier to be buried in the John D. Musser Post's lot.

Mr. Stephen D. Soars has been appointed station agent at Montandon, and is also agent for Adams' Express Company at that place.

Marriage announced of Miss M. Irene Lowe, Muncy, to Cpl. Gordon S. Montgomery of Malone, N.Y.

Frank Merrill, lifelong resident, died Monday at Rothfuss Clinic, Williamsport.

Mrs. Frank Johnson of Pennsdale received an unusual shock recently. While busy in the kitchen at her home she heard a noise and thinking it was her little daughter coming down stairs, she paid but little attention. On hearing it again, she went to another room and found a black snake nearly five feet in length.

Betty Shaw became the bride of Pvt. George Allen Frey on Sunday morning.

Last Friday evening the Muncy Fire department was called to extinguish a blaze at a small building on the former Crawford property on North Main street, now owned by John Fogleman.

Announcement has been made of Miss Eleanor Louise Feigles, Muncy to A.O. M. 3/c Paul Franklin Miller, Montgomery. The ceremony was performed July 26.

Mrs. Mary I. McCarty, aged 66 years, died in Milton where she had been visiting, Wednesday, July 28, after a brief illness.

Pvt. Larue Houseknecht of Waterboro, SouthCarolina, is home on furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. H.M. Houseknecht of Muncy.

Curt Barnes, Hughesville and Lee Barnes, Williamsport and Eagles Mere, brothers who are natives of Muncy,have purchased the car wash in East Muncy and have assumed control effective immediately.

Charles (Bud) Rosenbaum, in only his third competitive race of 1968 and fifth in his two-year racing career, won the competition for 44 Hydroplanes in the eastern divisional championship races of the American Powerboat association at Norristown on July 21.

Young Machinery Co. will merge with California firm.

Roy Schultz, Muncy, won the grand champion among the dairy cattle exhibited at the Lycoming County Fair.

Airmen Ronald L. Long, son of Mrs. Ellen Long of near Muncy recently completed a leave at his home and has reported to the USS Hancock, an aircraft carrier stationed at San Francisco.

Engagement announced Elizabeth Ann Poplawski, of New jersey, to John E. McCuaig.

U.S.Air Force Master Sergeant Dale E. Schooley, Muncy, has been decorated with the Bronze Star Medal at Griffiss AFB, N.Y., for meritorious service while engaged in military operations against Viet Cong forces.

Miss Doris Louise Hoover, Hughesville, became the bride of Alfred Joseph Morrison.
