Muncy Locals Sept. 12, 2018

September 12, 2018
By BARBARA C. BARRETT , The Luminary

I am very impressed with the list of activities the Muncy Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center has to offer. Each month they celebrate birthdays, they have themed activities and host special outings. The last week of this month they will feature the McNett Country Band and they will have fair games and prizes for the residents all week long. Last month they had a western weekend and cucumbers were picked from the resident garden for a nutritious summer salad. This is nice to know as we recognize National Assisted Living Week (September 9 15). Fortunately we have a wider selection of quality senior and long-term care options than ever before with choices such as skilled nursing facilities, assisted living residences and personal care homes according to the Pennsylvania Health Care Association (PHCA). The 2018 National Assisted Living Week theme`is "Capture the Moment" and offers hope to inspire residents to realize their dreams and seize the day. The theme also supports reflection, so residents can look back on the pivotal moments in their lives.

Wish Stacie Hart of Muncy the best of luck. She has entered the 49th annual Pillsbury Bake-Off contest. She said this is her first national baking competition and she is hoping her entry for her bacon cheese wrap appetizers will win a big prize.

The rain is keeping me away from my garden but it might be easier to divide those perennials for next year. Master Gardener Louise Fulmer will show us how on Monday, Sept. 17 at the Muncy Library. She is going to share the best time to dig them up, when to replant them and how to store them.

Meanwhile, I have been enjoying the kimchi we made last month at the Muncy library. I made mine with cabbage and carrots and just about every day, I take some out of the jar to eat. I am looking forward to fermenting other vegetables so I have them over the winter months. They can be kept in the refrigerator for many, many weeks.

Happy harvest time!
