Enlightening Items from old Luminarys

The Muncy Luminary

150 years ago

1868

Died at Laurelton, Union County, on the 14th inst., Mrs. Julia Halfpenny, formerly of this place, aged 54 years, 5 months, and 27 days.

On Tuesday evening at the Club meeting it is proposed to organized a horse company with lanterns, &c. Many from the country are moving in and it is expected a large company can be formed.

The Grant Invincibles met for drill on Friday evening and after practice paraded on Main street.

Salutes were fired at Lewisburg on Tuesday last, by the Artillery Company of that place, the occasion being the Republican mass meeting. The reports of the cannon were distinctly heard at this place and in the vicinity by number s of citizens.

Jas. F. Green, who occupied the room over the Post Office last winter as an Oyster Saloon, has opened a Saloon in the basement under Mrs. Rilev’s Millinery Store, next door to the United States Hotel. He has fitted it up nicely and conveniently, and is already serving up oysters, fresh from the city markets.

Many kinds of words have been received upon the change in the makeup and general appearance of the Luminary since the change in managers has taken place. It is the intention of the new manager, Herbert M. Edwards, to make further improvements, not only to the paper but to the office as well.

Mrs. Eldora Turner, wife of Raymond Turner, died Friday evening at the age of 16 years.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Russel Kahler, on Sept. 12, a daughter.

The fire insurance agency of Benjamin Renn in the future will be conducted by Leonard Stolz under the name of Renn and Stolz.

A quiet wedding took place on Saturday at the home of the bride at Sunset Hill farm when John Sharpless and Mrs. Annie Ecroyd Warner were united in marriage.

Miss Susan Haines died Tuesday morning at her home near Pennsdale, after a brief illness.

Marriage announced of Katherine Jane Guinter to J. ?Glenn Brelsford, of North Main Street.

Sgt. Forest E. Bubb, Muncy, has been awarded the Good Conduct Medal at the Stuttgart Army Air Field.

The Ven. Archdeacon and Mrs. S.B. Schofield announce the marriage of their daughter, Lt. Vera Agnes Schofield, U.S. Army Nurse Corps, to Lt. Woodson A. Sadler, U.S. Army, Aug. 2.

Frank Sterner, of Pennsdale, recently graduated as a flight officer from Waco, Texas., receiving his commission as Second Lieutenant. On July 3, Lt. Sterner was married to Miss Wanda Leuthner, of Williamsport.

Harold Mincemoyer left this week to enter the Naval Reserve.

Construction was begun this week on an eight-unit apartment house in Muncy, an undertaking of a group of five men known as Nicki Enterprises, who have indicated that this may be just a beginning in the field of creating new housing facilities for the community.

Entrepreneur Howard Hughes, the fabled resident of Las Vegas, Nev., dipped his hand gently into Muncy, Pa., last week when he acquired Sports Network Inc., which in turn is the owner of Muncy TV Corporation.

Miss Beth Aldish has been chosen by the senior class to represent Muncy High school at the 20th Annual Flaming Foliage Festival at Renovo.

Judge Charles F. Greevy, in an opinion handed down Tuesday, Sept. 17, has permanently enjoined Steins Sales and Service in Muncy from using the lot on South Main street as a used car lot or any other similar use.

Miss Patricia Anne Sayre, of Fairless Hill, and David E. Michael, of near Muncy, married Aug. 17.
