Montgomery Locals, Jan. 9, 2019

January 9, 2019
By JADE HEASLEY , The Luminary

When I look back at 2018, the first word that comes to mind is "drenched." It was certainly a challenging year with the weather and Montgomery had to deal with more than its fair share of flooding. Not surprisingly, central Pennsylvania got more inches of rain in 2018 than in any other year since records were first kept in the 1800s. It only seemed fitting that we got hit with so much rain on New Year's Eve! What a symbolic way to close out the year (at least it wasn't snow).

While I'm thankful there wasn't a major flood this year like the town experienced in 2011 or 1996, it was still difficult for many people who lived along the creeks or had their commutes interrupted numerous times over the summer. My thanks again to the volunteers of the Montgomery Emergency Management Agency who had to manually take the river readings in horrible weather to keep us updated on the conditions.

However, I'll try not to complain too much if it means we can finish out the winter without too many snowfalls. As much as I love Pennsylvania, I'm not a fan of ice and bitterly cold temperatures.

Another thing to be happy about is that the days are getting longer. I am ready for warm weather and hopefully a much drier summer than we had last year! We didn't really get much of a summer last year due to the rain, so I think we should all double up our efforts this year to make up for everything we missed last year. Bring on the sunshine, lightning bugs, and campfires!

Congratulations to Ariyannah Creamer for winning the Peace Poster contest that was held by the Montgomery Lions Club. The posters were created by Mrs. Sampsell's 7th grade art class. A display was recently held at the Montgomery Area Public Library.
