Hughesville Locals 12.4

December 4, 2019
by Nancy Hodge , The Luminary

Autumn appears to have decamped long before its "last day" on Friday, Dec. 20. I hope that, despite an early arrival, winter does not decide to hang around after its astronomical end in March. We will be weary of the sort of mess we've had this week.

Christmas shopping season is well underway and the Greater Hughesville Business Association (GHBA) is in the final days of the "5 to Drive" campaign. There's a lot to be found that will delight your family and friends, so be sure to "shop local" this week and turn in your "5 to Drive" card for the prize drawings on Sunday after the parade.

I need to go to the north end of Main Street and just stand still and look around. Driving, or riding past in the car, doesn't give me enough time to absorb all the changes that have been made to the whole intersection and neighboring properties. It's good to have these signs of improvement in the borough. Another improvement is the newly added parking area for patrons of the Silver Thorn Tavern on Main Street. Parking along the street can be tricky, especially once the snow gets plowed up onto the strip between curb and sidewalk, so a larger dedicated lot behind the business is safer and easier for all.

High school winter sports season has arrived, and the basketball, wrestling, swimming, and indoor track teams are beginning their competitive schedules. Pick up a copy of the schedule for all teams, or check the calendar online in the athletics section of the school district website, elsd.org. It's a lot of fun to cheer for the Spartans!
