June 1, 1850

Our town was thrown into some commotion by the arrest, on Tuesday last, of a nameless individual and wife, in consequence of the discovery in their possession of stolen property. The husband is said to be one of the gang who came to Port Penn some months since, accompanied by their reputed wives, and fixed themselves in a home in that village where they have been residing without any visible means of support.

Saturday, June 22, 1872

John Quinn, saddler, of this place, cut off the end of one of his fingers one day last week, while cutting leather with “a half-moon” knife.

The Montoursville normal and the Hughesville school held a joint picnic in a grove near Hughesville on Saturday.

The roof of the dwelling house of Samuel Gortner took fire about 12 o’clock on Wednesday, near the chimney, but the flames were extinguished before much damage.

Friday, June 18, 1880

Mrs. J.S. Farley cut a pumpkin on Tuesday that weighed 18 pounds. It was grown last year, and was found as fresh and sweet as it was last fall.

The dreaded army worm has made its appearance in some of the lower counties.

Quite a tornado passed over the Muncy Valley last Sunday afternoon, and a number of trees were blown down.

Lairdsville is to have a band.

A party of six Watsontown gentlemen fished in the streams of Sullivan county last week and caught 1100 trout.

According to the census the population of Muncy borough is 1,153.

A team belonging to Mathias Fague became frightened by the blowing of the whistle at Sprout’s factory, on Monday noon, and ran away. They were stopped by a stump on Water street, but not until they were quite severely injured.

John Dimm’s tailoring establishment was entered Tuesday night and robbed of $75 worth of goods.

Dennis Hunter, a colored man residing at Williamsport, will be 109 years of age if he lives until next Christmas.

The following news item from the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin will be of interest to Muncy people. Harry Ditzler is a grandson of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Ditzler, of this place, and has appeared in concert in Muncy. The world’s record for the 100 yard dash is nine and three fifths seconds. Totally blind with only one week’s track training, Harry Ditzler, of the instruction of the Blind, at Overbrook, made a 100 yards dash in eleven and three-fifths seconds.

The fortieth annual commencement exercises of the Munch High School were held in Education hall last Friday evening. The hall and stage were decorated in the class flower, Iris. Fourteen graduated from the high school.

Miss Emily Ruth Oberfell, of Williamsport, former Muncy resident, and Mr. M.P. Turner were united in marriage Wednesday morning.

A quiet wedding took place at the home of Mr. and Mrs. L.H. Priest, of Hughesville, on Wednesday evening of last week, when their daughter, Mildred, was married to Hiram L. Edwards of this place.

Horribly mangled and instantly killed while operating a machine to cut feed for his swine, was the fate that Saturday afternoon overtook George Lockard, a farmer, at his home in Muncy township, ear the Fairfield township line, not far from Montoursville.

Williamsport was hit by a tornado Sunday evening, which caused considerable damage.

Muncy was the place to be this past Memorial Day weekend with special activities planned for the weekend: Antique and Classic Car Show downtown, the Car Show Parade, child finger painting at the fire hall and Art in the Park.

Muncy veteran, Donald Kahler, received a peace medal at a special service in Northern Ireland to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of V. E. Day.

Students from Mrs. Hacker’s fifth grade class planted barrels in downtown this past week. The hands-on project was a joint effort of Myers Elementary School, Eiswerth’s Garden Center and the Muncy Business Association.

Erma Houseknecht and Larry Grieco received Armstrong prints at the awards ceremony held recently at Muncy High School. Mrs. Houseknecht retires after teaching English for 31 years while Mr. Grieco retires after teaching science for 33 years.
