Fire destroys Brady Township barn

By Staff | Jun 2, 2009

All the horses safely got out of a burning Brady Township barn Sunday, and no one was injured. The 204 Cemetery Hill Road barn owned by Harry Staib III was destroyed in the accidental blaze, according to Clinton Township assistant fire Chief Dennis Miller.

Miller said two men delivering hay were inside the barn trying to start a motorhome’s engine at 4:20 p.m. when it backfired and flames from the carburetor caught nearby hay on fire.

Property loss and insurance information are unknown, but firefighters did prevent the flames from spreading to any houses. Five horses were led out of the barn and watched the fire from a nearby pasture. Farmhand Dennis Hard said items destroyed inside the barn include saddles, hay, a trailer and other equipment for the horses.

Neighbors Dennis and Brenda Crapser said the barn quickly ignited and was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. Miller said the fire was extinguished in about an hour.
