Kim Smith is PennDOT Employee of the Month

Kim Smith has been named PennDOT District 3 employee of the month for February 2020.
Kim is the District’s Safety Press Officer (SPO), responsible for promoting traffic safety initiatives designed to educate the public about issues such as texting and driving, seat belt safety, impaired driving, child safety seats, aggressive driving, pedestrian safety, mature driving and work zone safety.
- ver the years Kim has developed a rapport with local communities within the district, setting up safety events to help promote the Department’s safety programs. She approaches her assignments with an extremely positive attitude, is energetic, creative and resourceful when promoting roadway safety.
Her job duties frequently require her to work extra-long hours beyond her normal working time, including evenings and weekends. Her dedication to her work and creative ideas has earned her recognition not only within the District, but also with the Department.
Kim has been awarded: The Highway Safety Award in 2016 for her work on highway safety programs; Most Creative campaign in 2017, for her “Head Up, Phones Down” campaign; and the Highway Safety Project of the Year Award in 2019, for her work honoring the son of a contractor who lost his father in a work zone crash; among other awards.?
Recently, due to a vacancy, Kim took on extra duties in addition to her SPO duties and filled in as the District’s Community Relations Coordinator. In this capacity, she was required to be available during emergencies and severe weather events to provide important information to the public.?
Kim is a team-player, possesses a positive attitude and is committed to the Department, often going above and beyond what is required of her.?
Kim is a 5-year employee of PennDOT. She lives in Montgomery with her husband, Russ, and son, Carter, who is currently attending Bloomsburg University.
