Fair worker accused of not registering violent sex offender status with police

HUGHESVILLE – An Ohio carnival worker at the Lycoming County Fair has been arrested on charges of failing to register as a convicted sex offender with the state police when he came here last week to work at the fair, according to borough Patrolman Chad Aldenderfer.

Matthew David Benkeo, 24, of Akron is classified as “a violent sexual predator,” Aldenderfer said, adding that Benkeo was required to notify state police at Montoursville within 48 hours when he relocated here for the fair, but failed to do so.

Benkeo was taken into custody early Thursday morning for public drunkenness at South Main and Academy streets, Aldenderfer said. When the officer entered the carnival worker’s name into the National Crime Information Center, he learned that the man was a convicted sex and that he had not alerted state police of his new location.

Following his arraignment before District Judge Kenneth T. Schriner Jr. on a charge of convicted sex offender failing to register, Benkeo was committed to the Lycoming County Prison in lieu of $10,000 bail.
