Cell phone distraction suspected in crash

By Staff | Nov 30, 2010

A Muncy woman is hospitalized from injuries state police in Milton said she sustained Sunday afternoon while simultaneously driving and using a handheld cellular phone near the routes 44 and 15 intersection, Gregg Township.

Jessica L. Billman, 22, reportedly was using the phone while driving a 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier police said collided at 4:20 p.m. on Route 44 with a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado driven eastbound by Shawn J. Rudy, 35, of Watsonstown.

Billman, whom police said was traveling westbound, attempted to make a turn into a gas station when officers said she failed to see Rudy approaching from the opposite direction.

Rudy, who was wearing a seatbelt, was not injured.

Police said Billman, who wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, was taken by ambulance to Evangelical Medical Center in Lewisburg and later transferred to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.

A Geisinger spokeswoman said Monday Billman is in serious condition at the hospital.
