An intoxicated woman out on the town celebrating her 64th birthday was rescued from her burning van by her grandson who pulled her from the vehicle moments after it crashed and caught fire on a set of railroad tracks in Montoursville, according to borough police.

Linda M. Coffin, of 930 Michael Hollow Road, Muncy Creek Township, had a blood-alcohol content level of .14 at the time of the incident, which occurred at the foot of Reading Lane about 3 a.m. on Nov. 10, Patrolman Kurt Hockman said.

She and her grandson, Dustin Mort, a passenger, had driven “14 blocks” on the set of railroad tracks before the van suddenly crashed and caught fire, Hockman said.

Mort had been asleep and awoke just in time to pull Coffin from the vehicle, the officer said.

Coffin, who was not injured, told Hockman that she had been out “celebrating her birthday and admitted to consuming several alcoholic beverages at a bar,” Hockman said.

The officer said Coffin had no idea how she ended up on the railroad tracks. The officer detected an odor of alcohol on her breath and noticed that her eyes were glassy.

Coffin was arraigned before District Judge Gary A. Whiteman on a charge of driving under the influence of intoxicants. She was released on $2,500 bail.
