Elderly couple charged with shoplifting
After fleeing Kmart on East Third Street without paying for $133 worth of merchandise, an elderly Unityville couple drove to the Lycoming Mall and stole $843 worth of merchandise from Macy’s on May 29, state police alleged in court papers.
Walter Lorenz, 79, and his 71-year-old wife, Shirley, of 1009 Iroquois Road, Franklin Township, have been charged with two conspiracy counts to shoplifting for their alleged actions, police said.
As they fled Kmart in Loyalsock Township in a Mercury Marquis, a witness recorded the car’s license plate and relayed it to police.
A short time later, a state trooper on routine patrol spotted the car parked outside Macy’s at the Lycoming Mall. As he inspected the interior of the vehicle, the trooper spotted on the car’s floor a pile of items he suspected was stolen merchandise. Additional state troopers responded to the parking lot.
Within minutes, Lorenz and his wife were nabbed as they exited Macy’s, police said. Inside Shirley’s purse were $843 worth of stolen items, police said.
The couple have been sent a summons to appear before District Judge Jon E. Kemp.
