Garage and vehicles destroyed in blaze

By Staff | Nov 19, 2013

HUGHESVILLE – Firefighters responded to a four-car garage fire at the Richard Welsh residence, 751 Frymire Hollow Road, Penn Township, about 1:20 p.m. Sunday.

Borough Fire Chief Steve Stiger said the fire destroyed the structure and a pickup truck, a Jeep Compass sport-utility vehicle and several tractors.

Firefighters also doused flames spreading to a nearby wood shop on the property, he said.

Neither Welsh nor any of volunteer firefighters in the area were injured, he said.

The fire, just off Beaver Lake Road, kept crews from Hughesville, Picture Rocks, Muncy area, Muncy Township, Muncy Valley and Lairdsville busy, and smoke could be seen drifting off the scene and throughout the hollow just north of the borough.

Getting water to the fire was hampered by the road that was 3/4-mile into a wooded area and off Beaver Lake Road. Several of the volunteers used all-terrain vehicles to access the fire scene, Stiger said.

Winds were gusting, but the location of the fire was in the hollow and didn’t impair the firefighters or lead to flames spreading quickly to other buildings.

Stiger did not release a cause of the fire which is not considered to be suspicious, but a state police fire marshal has been contacted to conduct an investigation.
