Driver hurt in van fire

By Staff | Jan 14, 2014

MUNCY – A Superior Plus Energy employee suffered minor burns to his hands Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 7 when he attempted to put out a fire in the back of his service van on the Route 405 bridge over the Susquehanna River, according to Muncy Area Assistant Fire Chief James Michael.

“There was a bucket with some oil residue in it along with some rags in the back of the van,” Michael said.

Something apparently sparked a fire when the employee, whose name was not released, had to slam on his brakes on the bridge about 1:20 p.m., Michael was told.

Investigators believe something may have spilled in the van to cause the fire.

After the employee was unsuccessful in putting out the fire, a passerby stopped and put it out with an extinguisher. The driver was taken by ambulance to Williamsport Regional Medical Center.

The cause of the fire remained a mystery, Michael said.
