HUGHESVILLE – Two brothers and a woman were routed from their rental home on Route 405 in Wolf Township early Friday morning when flames broke out above a second-floor bathroom, borough Fire Chief Steve Stiger said.

All three occupants already were safely out of the home when firefighters arrived on the scene at 1050 Route 405 about 1:30 a.m., Stiger said.

The fire was discovered after one of the occupants got up to go to the bathroom, Stiger said. “They heard something falling from the ceiling,” he added.

The identities of the occupants and the home owner were not available at the time.

“Heavy smoke was coming out from under the eaves when firefighters first arrived,” Stiger said.

Firefighters donned self-contained breathing apparatus and carried hoses to the second the floor. Most of the fire was knocked down in about 30 minutes.

Besides Hughesville, fire companies from Muncy Area, Picture Rocks, Pennsdale, Clinton Township and Montoursville responded to the blaze. Tankers were used to shuttle water from a nearby hydrant.

The local chapter of the American Red Cross was provided emergency assistance to the displaced tenants, who did not have renter’s insurance, Stiger said.

Cpl. Nicholas A. Loffredo, a state police fire marshal, responded to the scene and determined the fire was likely accidental, but the exact cause has not yet been determined, Stiger said.

He termed fire damage to the property as moderate, but an exact amount of the loss has not been determined.
