Man purchases handgun and accidentally shoots himself
PENNSDALE – Within minutes after purchasing a handgun at Gander Mountain, 22-year-old Raymond Joseph Kostowskie accidentally shot himself as he was going through the drive-thru at the nearby McDonald’s on Lycoming Mall Circle, according to state police.
Upon exiting the store, Kostowskie loaded the handgun in the parking lot before he and a friend, Jannelle K. Kaufman, drove to McDonald’s police said. He had placed the weapon in the car’s center console, police said.
While in the drive-thru, Kostowskie, formerly of Lewisburg and now living in the Schuylkill County borough of Ringtown, grabbed the firearm and it went off, police said. A bullet went through his left hand and thigh, police said. The incident occurred on March 10, 2013.
Trooper Troy Hansen, the lead investigator, said Kostowskie was treated at the Williamsport Regional Medical Center. Kostowskie initially reported that a bullet in the console exploded, which Hansen said did not happen.
Following his recent arraignment before District Judge Allen P. Page III on charges of carrying a concealed weapon without a license, recklessly endangering and false reports to law enforcement, Kostowskie was released on released on $10,000 bail.
