Unrelated porn charges for two local men
HUGHESVILLE – A boy scout camp director and high school science teacher were arrested for possessing and sharing child pornography.
Matthew Manning, 39, of 401 W. Academy St., was at Boy Scouts of America Camp Karoondinha in Millmont on Wednesday when state attorney general agents searched his residence, where Manning lives with his parents. Agents reportedly found more than 50 videos and more than 100 images of child pornography on a computer Manning used, according to an affidavit.
Manning was taken into custody at Camp Karoondinha and was transported back to Hughesville for processing, the affidavit said.
Agents conducted an undercover investigation prior to the search and found child pornography Manning allegedly made available for download on a peer-to-peer networking website, according to a criminal complaint. During the investigation, agents downloaded one of these files and traced the IP address to Manning’s residence.
He is charged with 25 counts of possession of child pornography, one count of distribution of child pornography and one count of criminal use of a communication facility, the attorney general’s office said.
Manning was arraigned before Judge Allen Page and committed to Lycoming County prison in lieu of a $150,000 bail.
Also facing child pornography charges is Perry L. Bassler, 62, of 468 Lycoming Mall Drive, Montoursville.
During an investigation, agents downloaded several files depicting children under the age of 18 doing sexually explicit acts via a peer-to-peer network and were able to trace these files to the IP address of Bassler’s computer.
According to an affidavit, agents seized four computer towers at Bassler’s residence and discovered child pornography.
Bassler admitted to agents that he had been downloading child pornography but could not say how long nor how often he had been doing so, a criminal complaint said.
He was taken into custody and charged with four counts of distribution of child pornography, four counts of possession of child pornography and one count of criminal use of a communication facility.
Bassler was arraigned by Judge Allen Page and jailed in lieu of a $125,000 bail.
