Man’s death due to exposure

By Staff | Feb 13, 2015

A body found on a remote state forestry access road late Sunday afternoon on Feb. 1st by some snowmobilers has been identified as 84-year-old Hiram Phillips, of Hughesville, according to Lycoming County Coroner Charles E. Kiessling Jr.

“We believe his death was due to exposure and hypothermia,” Kiessling said.

Investigators do not know what the elderly man was doing in the remote area, about 3 to 5 miles southwest of Route 44 and Vandyke Road, near the Washington-Limestone Township line, when two snowmobilers discovered his body just after 4 p.m., Kiessling said.

“We believe he drove his truck to the area and started walking after it apparently became stuck in the snow,” Kiessling said. The vehicle was found a short distance from his body, Kiessling added.

Nippenose Twp. Fire, Jersey Shore EMS, Lycoming County Coroner’s Office, PA State Police and DCNR personnel responded to the scene.
