Patrolman arrests illegal alien on DUI charges
MUNCY – When borough Patrolman David Williams caught up with a hit-run driver within minutes after a crash, he ended taking into a custody an intoxicated illegal alien from Mexico who had no driver’s license, according to court records.
After sideswiping another man’s pickup truck near Main and Water streets about 9:30 p.m. March 8, Emar Alexander Lopez-DeLeon drove a short distance before crashing into a snow pile as he was being pursued by the man whose truck he hit, Williams said.
Williams said that when he arrived on the scene, he smelled “an intoxicating beverage” on the 23-year-old Lopez-DeLeon, whose eyes were glassy and bloodshot and whose speech was slurred.
“He also was swaying back and forth,” the officer said of Lopez-DeLeon, who admitted that he has been in this country three years illegally from Mexico, according to the officer.
The driver did not have a valid license and there was no insurance on the vehicle he was driving, Williams said.
Lopez-DeLeon was taken into custody, but he refused to provide a blood test, Williams said.
Arraigned hours later before District Judge Jerry C. Lepley on charges of driving under the influence of intoxicants and accidents involving damage to attended property (hit-run), Lopez-DeLeon remains jailed in the Lycoming County Prison in lieu of $10,000 bail.
