Fire destroys buggy barn

By Staff | Dec 3, 2015

ELIMSPORT – Flames destroyed a garage an Amish family used to store their buggies on Route 44 early Sunday morning, according to Washington Township Fire Chief Brett Ulrich said.

Responding from his home to the fire at 15866 Route 44 about 1 a.m., Ulrich said he could see “an orange glow” in the sky more than a mile from the scene.

The building at the John Lapp farm was engulfed in flames when firefighters reached the scene, he said.

Firefighters from the township, Clinton Township, Montgomery and Warrior Run Area responded and had the bulk of the fire knocked down in about 25 minutes, he said. There were no injuries.

Heat from the flames melted the siding of the family’s milking barn, about 50 feet away, but stopped the fire before serious damage resulted, Ulrich said.

He ruled the cause of the fire accidental, and he said the Lapp family had insurance.
