An elderly Clinton Township man has been arrested on charges of allegedly stealing more than $30,000 from the S.O.L. Club at 345 Market St., according to the state police’s Bureau of Liquor Control Enforcement.

Robert E. Turner, 75, of 110 Brouse Road, Montgomery waived his preliminary hearing last week on one felony count of theft as well as one misdemeanor count of theft. He remains free on $75,000 bail.

Investigators allege he stole $33,025 from the club between January 2014 and last summer.

It was during a recent review of the club’s financial records that the club discovered the shortfall, police said.

“Turner was responsible for counting the money in the club’s cash drawer and preparing a cash-drawer tally sheet,” an investigator said in an affidavit.

Police did not say if he was a club member or an employee.

In an interview with police, Turner has admitted to taking some of the club’s money.

“He stated he retired about nine years ago and started taking money from the club a few years into his retirement,” according to an affidavit.

Turner said he believes he “likely has been taking money for five years,” the investigator said.

Turner said he would “remove $50 every couple of days from the cash drawer,” the affidavit stated.

“I would remove the cash and put it in my pocket, and use it for gas or whatever,” the investigator quoted Turner in the affidavit.

Police said Turner told them that he used the money for “everyday living expenses as well as to pay taxes.”

Police allege that Tuner also stole an additional $750 from the club’s safe.
