ALLENWOOD – A federal judge has sentenced a Massachusetts woman to two years in federal prison for her part in trying to get heroin to inmates at the U.S. Penitentiary at Allenwood.

Sharon Magrath, 52, of Randolph, Massachusetts, was sentenced Tuesday by U.S. Middle District Judge Matthew W. Brann on the charges of distribution and attempting to distribute heroin to the inmate on Aug. 11, 2011.

Magrath was charged by a federal grand jury in the two-count felony indictment with attempting to distribute narcotics to inmates by mailing envelopes to them.

Magrath entered a guilty plea on Jan.12.

The investigation was conducted by the FBI, and the Federal Bureau of Prisons Special Investigative Service. Assistant U.S. Attorney Wayne P. Samuelson was assigned to the case.

Magrath had faced a maximum penalty under the federal statute of 20 years’ imprisonment, and a fine of $250,000 for each offense.
