A city man was struck and killed early Thursday morning as he and another man were crossing Lycoming Mall Drive at Fairfield Road, just east of Montoursville, in Fairfield Township, according to state police.

Cheney Ray Orwig, 29, was rushed to the UPMC Susquehanna Williamsport Regional Medical Center, but he was pronounced dead in the emergency room at 7:23 a.m., Lycoming County Coroner Charles E. Kiessling Jr. said.

Orwig was hit by a westbound pickup truck moments after he and other riders stepped off an eastbound River Valley Transit bus about 6:30 a.m., police said.

The riders getting off the bus were all going to work at various businesses in the immediate area, police said.

After getting off the bus, Orwig and another man walked from behind the bus into the road, attempting to cross from the south to the north side of Lycoming Drive, police said.

While one man made it across, Orwig was hit in the westbound lane by the truck, whose driver fled the scene not once, but a second time after returning to the scene right after the crash, police said.

Police identified the driver as 69-year-old Gary Wayne Worth, of Muncy, who notified investigators a little more than an hour after the crash that he was operating the Dodge Ram 2500 that struck the pedestrian.

Police met him on Broad Street in Montoursville and took him to the barracks on nearby Cherry Street for questioning. The truck also was impounded.

No charges have been filed, and Worth was released, police said. However, the investigation is ongoing and troopers will be consulting with the county District Attorney’s Office.

Lycoming Mall Drive from Fairview Drive to Fairview Road was closed until an accident resconstructionist and other troopers completed their investigation about 10:40 a.m.

Montoursville firefighters and fire police, along with employees of the state Department of Transportation, also responded to the crash.
