MONTGOMERY – When Ruslan Michael Murphy, 20, of Narbeth, was experiencing some mechanical difficulty last week with his 2013 Subaru, another person helped him push the car off the road and into a driveway.

Believing he was at a friend’s house in Lewisburg, the man entered the home and carried out what he thought was a case of beer and put it in the trunk of his car, according to state police.

A neighbor watching this alerted the home owner, James Snyder, who arrived at the Clinton Township property on Route 54 and confronted Murphy. Police also were called and responded.

While questioning Murphy, Trooper Blake Gaines “detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage” on the man’s breath, according to an affidavit.

The neighbor told Gaines he saw Murphy behind the wheel of the car revving the engine before it was pushed into Snyder’s driveway.

Murphy did not realize that he was at “a stranger’s home” until he was approached by Snyder who demanded that he return to him his case of apple butter – not beer, Gaines said.

Arraigned before District Judge Jon E. Kemp on charges of burglary, theft, driving under the influence and careless driving, Murphy, already on probation in Delaware County, was committed to the Lycoming County Prison, but has since been released on $90,000 bail.
