Two lives claimed in three vehicle crash at Route 220
PENNSDALE – Two died and three others were injured in a violent three-vehicle crash at Route 220 and Rabbittown Road about 3:20 p.m. Monday, October 15 fire officials confirmed.
Killed in the crash was one of the drivers, a 78-year-old New York City man who ran a stop sign at the intersection, about a quarter mile north of here, according to Lycoming County Coroner Charles E. Kiessling Jr.
The elderly man was driving a Chevrolet Trailblazer that crashed into two other vehicles according to emergency responders.
He was the sole occupant in the vehicle, Muncy Township Fire Chief Scott Oldweiler said. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene by a deputy coroner.
Kiessling said it appeared that the driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, died of upper body trauma injuries. The driver of the Trailblazer was Paul Bendoriusa. Following the collision, the Trailblazer overturned, landing in a ditch, Oldweiler said.
One other adult male and three women also were injured, Oldweiler said, adding that three were taken to Muncy Valley Hospital and one was taken to UPMC Susquehanna Williamsport Medical Center.
Volunteer firefighters, along with an ambulance crew, responded from Pennsdale. Additional ambulances responded from Hughesville, Picture Rocks, Muncy Area and Montoursville. Paramedics also were dispatched to the scene.
The accident closed a section of Route 220 for nearly three hours.
State police are investigating the crash.
Later it was reported the three-vehicle crash on Route 220 claimed a second life, according to Lycoming County Coroner Charles E. Kiessling Jr.
Hurley Gordner, 97, of Hughesville, a wheelchair-bound passenger in a Dodge Caravan, died Tuesday afternoon, October 16 in the intensive care unit at UPMC Susquehanna Williamsport Regional Medical Center of blunt force trauma and multiple fractures, Kiessling said. State police said Gordner was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Nicole Temple, 31, of Muncy, who suffered minor injuries and was treated at Muncy Valley Hospital.
Another passenger in the same vehicle, Felicia Bauman, 31, of Muncy, also was treated at Muncy Valley Hospital.
Temple was traveling east on Route 220 when her van and the Trailblazer traveling north on Beacon Light Road collided about 3:30 p.m., state police said.
Following the initial collision, the passenger side of Temple’s van struck the passenger side of a Chevrolet Spark driven by Lily Winder, 57, of Montgomery, who was traveling west on Route 220. Winder also was treated at Muncy Valley Hospital.
