Former treasurer accused of stealing from combat veterans organization

A Northumberland County man who served just over two years as treasurer for a local chapter of the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association has been arrested on felony charges for allegedly stealing nearly $18,000 from the organization, according to state police

Steven Haines, 54, of McEwensville, faces four felony theft charges for illegally removing $17,951 from the association’s bank account at the Montoursville branch office of M&T Bank at 450 Broad St. between late May 2016 and mid-November last year, police alleged in court papers.

As acting treasurer for the association from early May 2016 to two months ago, Haines had exclusive access to the group’s bank access card and was “in control of all the chapter’s finances,” police said.

Following his arraignment last week before District Judge Gary A. Whiteman, Haines was released on $25,000 bail.
