Muncy resident, Heather Simmons, tasted the first scoop of the new flavor, Chocolate Covered Strawberry ice cream, which she herself created. Honored at a social Friday morning at Weis Markets in Muncy, the flavor is now available for purchase at 164 stores. MUNCY – For all ice cream lovers, a new flavor has just been added to Weis Markets, Inc. This new flavor has been created by Muncy resident Heather Simmons who won Weis’ Be the Next Flavor Creator contest. She said she read about the contest on Facebook, and had an idea that led to a new Weis Quality Ice Cream flavor, ‘Chocolate Covered Strawberry.’

On Friday morning, June 28, at the Weis Markets in Muncy Creek Township, Simmons, as a grand prize winner, was the first to try her flavor creation at an ice cream social. Customers who came into the store that day also had an opportunity to sample the ice cream. Starting July 1, this winning flavor is available for purchase at all 164 Weis market locations. Heather also won a year’s supply of Weis Quality Ice Cream and was presented a large certificate with gift cards that morning by the Weis Markets Public Relations team. Heather has added the 65th flavor.

She said she came up with the idea while making chocolate covered strawberries and thought, “Chocolate covered strawberry ice cream – how can you not like that!” She was notified by Weis on February 20 by e-mail that she was one of three finalists.

This was the first contest held for ice cream by Weis Markets according to Dennis Curtin, Director of Public Relations at Weis. “We had 400 submissions,” said Jim Curtis, Lead Business Development Manager. “Heather’s flavor got 51 percent of the vote,” said Michael Sheehan, part of the marketing group.

By launching this new Weis Quality Ice Cream flavor, Chocolate Covered Strawberry, Weis Markets is now celebrating the start of summer and National Ice Cream Month, which started July 1,
