Garden Club plans new year

By Staff | Mar 25, 2014

HUGHESVILLE – The Hughesville Garden Club met on March 10, their first meeting of the year, to organize the monthly program calendar. About 15 members were present. Except for the months of January and February, the organization always meets the second Monday of the month starting at 7 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hughesville.

Organized in 1948, the group is mainly in charge of maintaining the horticulture building and displays during the Lycoming County Fair.

The first president was Mrs. Frank Tule and Mrs. Georgine Johnson is current president. Other officers are Bev Walters, Vice-President; Carol Farina, Secretary; Connie Brague, Assistant Secretary; Patrice Lundy, Treasurer; and Connie Brague, Assistant Treasurer.

Carol Farina is also Chaplain and opened the meeting with a devotion, welcoming Spring and praising flowers as a renewal of life.

Other projects taken on by the garden club are planting flowers by the “Welcome to Hughesville” signs, and remembering shut-ins at Christmas time.

The group also likes to have a summer buffet picnic and a Christmas luncheon. Other programs discussed for the year include a possible tour of Longreach gardens in Muncy Township, and presentations on perennials and composting.

The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 14 at 7 p.m. and will be hosted by Beverly Walters and Barbara Shaffer. New members are always welcome. For more information call Georgine Johnson at 570-584-2380.
