Santa arrives in a cool drizzle
MUNCY – It is with community spirit, rain or shine, in celebration of Christmas and the traditional arrival of Santa Claus that makes Muncy a memorable place during the season. Every year the Muncy Post Office gets plenty of donations to add to the holiday decor. Two beautifully decorated trees with colored lights and wooden toys greet the customers in the lobby. John Fave from the Post Office said that every year the donated list keeps growing.
On Saturday morning Mr. and Mrs Santa Claus made an appearance in front of the post office with their umbrellas after arriving in the pouring rain at noon on Muncy’s fire truck.
It wouldn’t be Christmas without the help of many organizations contributing to its success. The Muncy Kiwanis Club has sponsored Santa’s House for the past 21 years. “It started in 1994,” said Kathy Grenoble.
The house is constructed of wood and painted inside and outside to resemble a cozy setting. It is placed behind the Muncy Post Office and every year on the first Saturday in December children line up to tell Santa what they want for Christmas.
Grenoble said that this year Santa handed out gift bags with coloring books and activity cards instead of the usual candy canes which often didn’t get eaten. The Muncy Key Club served baked cookies and hot chocolate, the Muncy High School band played musical holiday tunes, and Victoria Thompson Hess from the Muncy Library read “The Night Before Christmas.”
There are many sponsors and volunteers that make this event happen. It is a collaborative effort among the Muncy Kiwanis, Muncy Post Office, Muncy Fire Company, Muncy High School, Muncy Library, SWoodlands Bank, Weis, Kelloggs and the Station House.
Volunteers Nate Bower, Deb and Marshal Frye, Nathan and Kathy Grenoble, and Mary and Oliver Sones all contributed their time to make everyone feel welcome.
