HUGHESVILLE – Military funerals will continue to receive all the dignity and respect they deserve, thanks to the generosity of McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home.
A Ceremonial Bugle has been donated to Glenn Sharrow American Legion Post 35 in memory of Gordon McCarty and Richard Thomas, both veterans who in 1972 joined partnership in Hughesville’s only home for funerals.
According to Commander Abe Pittenger, “We were sharing a bugle with another Post, and getting the instrument back and forth in a timely manner took away from the short time needed to assemble a color guard.”
When Michael Hacker, current owner/director of the local funeral home became aware of the situation, he offered to provide the bugle donating the instrument in honor of his predecessors.
“We have a good working relationship, he’s a great guy,” Pittenger said of Hacker who replied, “This was a way for us to give back to the community.”
