Smoke, smoke, smoke that BBQ

By Staff | Jul 26, 2017

CAROL SHETLER/The Luminary Don and Tiffany Huffman (right) were first time vendors at the 2017 Lycoming County Fair. The Muncy couple devised their special bar-b-que recipe.

HUGHESVILLE Food seems to be one of the main attractions at the fair. That fact was confirmed last week when THE LUMINARY randomly asked ten persons on the midway their reasons for going to the fair.

Making their debut this year was the Happy Family BBQ of Muncy. They were situated next to the free stage on the south end of the Shaffer building.

Manned by Don Huffman, family and friends, they served chicken, pork, hamburgers and hot dogs. Cooking was done on site in a large home-built smoker. Homemade sides included macaroni salad, baked beans and coleslaw.

“I’ve been two years perfecting the recipe. We’ve done small events for friends and family, and after giving up my job, I got serious about this business,” Huffman said.

In the short time since his 2001 graduation from Warrior Run High School, Huffman has been on the move. Upon graduation, he served four years in the military including two terms totaling 3-1/2 years in Iraq. He was in aerial fiber optics, then worked for a gas company.

CAROL SHETLER/The Luminary Don Huffman bastes his secret sauce to the chicken while cooking in his homemade smoker during the Lycoming County Fair.

The name ‘Happy Family’ is an extension of his wife’s already established business. Tiffany is in sales with herbal and body oil products.

Of course, no serious cook gives up their trade secrets, but Huffman stresses that several bastings of the meat and hardwood used in smoking enhances the flavor.

The Happy Huffman family is available for catering and have the following events on their schedule: On Lycoming Creek Road at Sharon’s Notary every Wednesday; at Muncy’s Fourth Fridays; and the upcoming yard sales in Turbotville and Watsontown.

The family will be happy to bring their mobile BBQ pit to you. Contact them at 270-348-6683.
