HUGHESVILLE – This Friday, September 28, will be the second annual Alumni Night at the Hughesville High School football field. This event is coordinated by the school’s alumni association in coordination with District Superintendent Michael Pawlik, coaches, sports team supervisors and the instructors from the various school booster organizations and departments.

“Anyone who was active in different sports or activities while in high school is welcome to come,” said Cindy Shaner, class of ’78 and one of the main organizers this year along with alumnus Tom Smith from the class of ’69 and the current president of the Hughesville Alumni Association.

The Alumni Association was started 82 years ago and they have been meeting every Memorial weekend for an annual alumni banquet.

Whether it be sports, band, music, cheerleading, chorus or any activity, they are welcome according to Smith. “We had over 200 attend last year’s game event,” Smith said.

“This is a nice way to reconnect with teammates plus mix with other generations and share stories,” Shaner said.

Tables and tents will be set up for sign-in of alumni from various groups including wrestling, basketball, football, soccer, band, tennis, and more. The coin flip is done by the oldest signed in alumnus. (Must be signed in by 6:30 p.m.for the coin toss eligibility). Last year Myron Smith from the class of ’43 was the oldest present.

Hughesville will then take on the Warrior Run Defenders with kickoff at 7 p.m. Alumni are asked to bring lawn chairs so they can sit by the gold post. “This special seating is arranged for the alumni,” Smith said.

It is a great night for alumni to reconnect with former teammates as well as meet recent alumni and the committee is hoping to keep the event going from year to year. The idea came up last year after a brainstorming session to see what else the alumni association can do besides hold a banquet.

They also decided on a winter dance and held the first one last year. Many came to help and volunteer. Smith said, “This created a supportive interest in the school and brought back some alumni for fellowship and reconnecting.” The committee meets monthly to organize and plan the events.

The dance will be held March 9, 2019 in the school gymnasium. “Last year the dance was a lot of fun,” said Shaner. “We’re hoping to grow the events. This is a beginning process, and everyone is invited to come, not just alumni.”

The alumni committee wants everyone to stop by a table at the alumni game this Friday and register for some great prizes. Other committee members who helped are Ann Rider, Diane Shoop, Judy Egly, Steve Budman, Frank Poust, Ruth Poust, Paul McCoy, Evelyn Derrick, Carol Shetler, Amy Rogers, Krista Paternostro and Donna Gray Kiesinger.
