MUNCY – The Muncy School Board elected David A. Frederick to fill a vacancy at the Monday, Oct. 21 meeting.

David A. Frederick of Muncy Township, one of three members from the township on the nine-member board, was elected in an 8-0 vote to replace Connie Coyner, who resigned in September.

Coyner’s seat is not up in the Nov. 5 general election. Her resignation was effective Sept. 16.

Frederick, who has maintenance skills and works at Lycoming Housing Authority, will be in the seat until December 2021.

Carla Auten, a former board member and seasoned retired educator, did not receive a nomination.

Following a series of eight questions for each candidate, Frederick prevailed, but as Scott McLean, board president said, both are “class people.”

McLean said he has known both for more than 40 years and taught their children. “I have such respect for both and high regard,” he said.

The eight questions focused on the role and responsibility of board members, why they want to be on the board, responsibility of the board, voting to reach concensus and challenges the district faces.

In the last question, Frederick noted how the district was going to experience a wealth of retirements, who would be replaced with new teachers.

Auten also said money is the critical issue for districts, as is retirement limitations placed on districts and mandated programs.

The next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 18.
