Montgomery councilwoman wins mayoral seat

By Staff | Nov 27, 2019

A Montgomery Borough Councilwoman will assume the office of mayor next year in her municipality thanks to write-in votes.

Fae Herb was not on the ballot for mayor, but received 123 write-ins.

That total was more than enough to defeat Sean Leet, the only candidate for mayor on the ballot. It is believed that Herb is the first female serving as Montgomery’s mayor.

Leet collected just 92 votes, according to Lycoming County election results.

The write-in numbers were verified during the recent county official count conducted following the Nov. 5 election.

Write-in winners are not immediately available following the election.

It is only after the official count is completed that those names and their vote totals are verified by county election staff members who conduct the process.

Forest Lehman, county voter services director, noted a number of people won races for municipal positions including tax collector and auditor thanks to write-in votes.

The board of elections, he said, does not certify write-in votes for races in which there are clearly not enough of those votes to challenge winning ballot candidates.

All the write-in winners and the vote totals are available on the county voter services web site at www.lyco.org/Departments/Voter-Services.
