Auten Returns to Muncy School Board

MUNCY -A familiar face will once again serve on the school board, as Carla Auten was appointed last month to fill a vacancy on the Muncy School Board.

Auten, who takes the seat left by the resignation of Rhondel Moyle, had previously served for 10 years on the board during the 1990s. She is a former educator in the school district, retiring in 2003 as a special education teacher.

The board also voted to not exceed the Act 1 index of 3.4 percent set by the state’s department of education when formulating the district’s real estate rate for the 2020-21 fiscal year.

According to Andrew Seese, district business administrator, this means that the district cannot raise taxes higher than .57 mills, which translates to $57 for every $100,000 of a property’s value. By agreeing to not go beyond the index, the board is not saying that it will raise taxes, only that it will not go above .57 mills.

In other business, the board approved a weight room donation agreement with Muncy Bank and Trust. According to the agreement, a donation of $40,000 from the bank will be dispersed over a two-year period. The bank will be provided advertising in the new gym and access for their employees to the weight room. Seese noted that the new weight room and the wellness center will be also be open to the community.

The board also approved an agreement with Hillis-Carnes for materials testing done during November at a cost of $5,790.

The following change orders were also approved by the board for the addition/renovations project: PVC enclosure for shear bolts, $10,212; wall hydrants, $497; mirroring device, $3,993; wall issues at bar joists, $3,442.

A recommendation concerning reimbursements for the flexible spending account was approved by the board. The recommendation states that reimbursement of school district employees who have not received proper reimbursement from Alternative Benefits Systems, the district’s selected vendor for administration of employee flexible spending accounts for the 2019 plan year. The total outstanding net liability for all employee participants if $6,712. According to the recommendation, any future reimbursements received by AFS by employees will be returned to the district.

The board approved the following coaching appointments: boys’ basketball volunteers, Thad Martin and Noah Rymsza; girls’ basketball volunteers, Kassidi Lenhart and Emma Bigelow; elementary boys’ basketball volunteers, Justin Lisembee and Brandon Schrawder; elementary girls’ basketball volunteers, Kristina Rogers, Jan Lamper and Sarah Woodward; elementary wresting volunteers, George Walters, Joe Lowe, Erica Wright, Jason Charles, Brad Kunkle, Patrick Sparks and Schrawder; head Jr. High girls’ soccer, Jason Gresh and Bob Titman; head Jr. High boys’ soccer, John Karichner; Jr. High girls’ soccer volunteers, Allison Edwards and Madalyn Confer and Jr. High boys’ soccer volunteers, Armando Sassano and Confer.

Members present were: Joseph Earnest, David Edkin, David Frederick, Steven Hill, Scott Johnson, Lisa Sleboda, Kim Walker and Sarah Woodward. Absent was Rhondel Moyle.
