Blue and white for the kids

MUNCY-For over 40 years, Penn State students have taken it upon themselves to help children suffering from cancer as much as possible. The Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon is a year-long, student-led effort to raise funds and awareness for the fight against childhood cancer; fundraising efforts culminate Feb. 16 with a 46-hour, no-sitting, no-sleeping, dance marathon.

Since 1977, THON has partnered with The Four Diamonds at the Penn State Children’s Hospital. THON helps make it possible for The Four Diamonds to assist children being treated for cancer and their families at Penn State Children’s Hospital through superior care and comprehensive support

Affected by her sister’s battle with cancer eight years ago, Sarah Freezer continues to make strides toward raising money to support families affected by pediatric cancer. Hannah Freezer was just nine years of age while Sarah was 12.

Freezer, a 2017 graduate of Muncy, is currently a student at Penn State University, and the THON National Executive for Pillar, a special interest organization supporting THON, the largest student-run philanthropy in the world.

Recently, Freezer requested help from those who work for her alma mater to participate in a “dress down day” when school resumes on Thursday, Jan. 2.

Donations may be given in any amount, said Matt McCrone, a faculty member who volunteered to collect contributions at the high school building. Matt Alexander, K-12 Librarian, volunteered to muster funds at the elementary school building, McCrone said.

“I was involved with THON as a Penn State student, and I can tell you from first hand experience it is an amazing event,” he said.

Although not required, those participating are encouraged to wear blue and white Penn State attire. Sarah will be present at the end of the day to receive donations and to take group photos.

Cancer-free for the last five years, Sarah’s sister Hannah is now 17 and completing her senior year at Muncy. Sarah understands that every ounce of financial and emotional support has a great impact on families affected by pediatric cancer.
