With Valentine’s Day only days away and the promise of an early spring, love is in the air at the Taber Museum of the Lycoming County Historical Society, 858 West Fourth Street, Williamsport.

A small display of vintage valentines is on display in the front lobby of the museum. There is no charge to view the small exhibit. Centered around a Currier and Ives print, “The Lovers Reconciliation, ” a number of fragile, pop-up valentines from the permanent collections are on display. These feature a section of honeycomb and when expanded create a three-dimensional ‘object’ such as a fountain or a monument. As well, some were cleverly hinged so that when ‘popped up’, a three-dimensional image emerged, such as a locomotive engine. These were popular cards to send in the early 1900s. The exhibit will continue through mid-March.

Visitors are also encouraged to view the rest of the museum which features permanent exhibits chronicling the history of the county from its earliest residents, Native Americans, through colonial settlement, the development of the Pennsylvania canal system, immigration in the 19th century, and the heyday of the logging and lumbering industry. This industry created jobs for thousands and made some men and women rich.

At one time, there were more millionaires living in Williamsport than anywhere else in the United States. This era is reflected within our permanent gallery of logging photos and implements, as well as the re-creation of a Victorian parlor with an opulent crystal chandelier, rich draperies and wallpapers, and other accoutrements of the rich. As a guest continues through the permanent exhibits, one can view and listen to the musical heritage of the county, view images taken by photographer D. Vincent Smith, and perhaps snap a picture dressed in Victorian or 20th century costume, or behind a jail cell door. Price of admission is $7.50 per adult, $6 per senior citizen, $5 for children, ages 3-12, or $20 for a family (up to two adults plus children).
