Band and vocalists to perform at Pleasant Hill
Members of the trombone section of the Hughesville High School Spartan Band will be among instrumentalists playing patriotic songs during the service at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Hughesville. Although Memorial Day began as a way to honor Civil War soldiers, it has evolved into remembering all dead.
In addition to the band, a community chorus will sing two songs, “God of Our Fathers,” and “Forget Not the Dead.” The latter is appropriate for 2021 as this marks the 150th anniversary of the Agricultural Society known as the Grange. Written specifically for Decoration Day and printed in the songbook Grange Melodies, the refrain of “Forget Not the Dead” charges us to “Repeat their fond words, all their noble deeds cherish.”
As these past few months have seen the loss of family and friends, this annual ritual may provide solace. Members of the Glenn Sharrow American Legion Post #35 invites all to join them for the 10 a.m. service on Monday, May 31.
