Lucille Davis

MUNCY – At Muncy Valley Hospital, Lucille Davis and Betty Fisher have given a total of 80 years in volunteerism. The women, featured in this issue, are part of The Luminary’s salute to National Volunteer Appreciation Month.

Since 1974, Lucille Davis continues to volunteer in the Gift Shop one morning each week at UPMC. Her hours total 5,080. The count is not totally accurate, as Lucille started before the hospital kept records noting volunteer hours.

Lucille began before there was the lovely designated gift shop area that exists today. Lucille said, “Back then, gifts were kept in a downstairs closet from where volunteers filled a cart with snacks, gifts, cards and newspapers. The cart was wheeled around the halls of the hospital, with employees and patients being our customers. Other volunteers I recall during those early days were Yvonne Stiger and Clara Wall. At the time, I worked at Dow’s Pharmacy. The store was closed Wednesday afternoons, so that is when I went over to the hospital.”

Lucille and her late husband Harold, also helped with the Muncy Valley Hospital’s Art Auction, part of the annual Lawn Party held in June. “In the hospital hallway, we received and arranged donations for silent auctions. I helped the last time the Lawn Party was held.” When asked when she might bow-out of her 48-year volunteerism, Lucille said, “I’m going to keep on as long as I can. It gets me out of the house where I can be with people.”

Betty Fisher retired April 1, after 32 years as a volunteer at UPMC, beginning in Human Resources in 1990. She is celebrating her retirement with a gift shop donation of $4,000, proceeds from the gift shop.  Since 2007, Betty had been the shop’s coordinator. Other areas in which she’d volunteered include Human Resources and the Senior Information Center. Most recently, Betty made surgery charts for Same Day Services and physician offices.  She has also been an active auxiliary member, helping with the Lawn party, and treasurer of Lights of Love.
