Halloween at the Holiday House on Main Street

By Shirley Confer Boatman - | Oct 12, 2022

Anyone who passes by the Main Street corner house in Hughesville during the month of October can’t help noticing the costumed skeletons lurking about in different stages of action. There are ghostly couples, puking singles, creepy clowns, occupied coffins and haunting heads and hands attempting to crawl back into this world.

These spooky attractions are the creations of Don Breneisen, Sonya Kiesinger and Pam Feigles who occupy the house behind all those ghouls, goblins and boney frames.

Don purchased the house in 2016 and began decorating, but on a much smaller scale. And then it just grew. More purchases. More displays. More scares. He names Halloween as his favorite holiday.

Sonya and Pamela began renting part of the house five years ago and joined in the fun. They decorate the front part of the house, also adding more each year. The “Puking Skeleton” was a do-it-yourself project they added this year, along with an inflatable Daschund and Jack Skeleton. Elvira lurks in one of the windows.

On the side of the house, Don’s display includes a tricycle-riding skeleton, a talking bride and groom from the underworld, pall bearers and coffin, and a house-painting skeleton, among others.

“I try to change it up a little each year. I had a bus driver from the Hughesville School District tell me that when they go by here the kids just love looking to see what new decorations we have or if anything has changed,” Don said.

Halloween isn’t the only holiday you can enjoy at what some call “The Holiday House.” It’s decorated, often with skeletons costumed for each occasion, at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. At other times, an LED American flag and beautiful flowers adorn the property. Sonya said that they love “…seeing the joy it brings and having people saying they can’t wait to see what’s going in the yard next.”
