Hughesville’s ‘Landing field’ opening took place in 1932

The Luminary found the following additional information in a publication,“Hughesville, PA, 1852-2002, Borough of Hughesville celebrates Susquecentennial,” housed at the Hughesville Library:
“The official opening of the Amity “landing field” in Hughesville took place on September 3, 4 and 5, 1932, with Pat Brooks of the Penn-Harris Airport in Harrisburg in charge of the celebration and dedication. Mr. Brooks was in charge of an “air circus” that featured stunt flying, parachute jumping, contest races and passenger flying.
The facility was considered to be in ‘Great shape’ with surrounding obstacles removed and the field leveled. In 1934 borough council agreed to work with the state and federal governments to make added improvements to the Hughesville Airport. It was considered to be a “pick up” point for U.S. Air Mail.
A special “Air Mail Day” was observed on May 19, 1938. In association with the airport, Miller Shaw operated a “flying school.” It was at this time that the famous aviatrix, Amelia Earhart landed at the Hughesville airport.”
