Members of the Greater Hughesville Business Association gathered on Tuesday, July 18 at the Silver Thorne in Hughesville to officially present scholarships to two 2023 Hughesville graduates. Lillian Shoemaker, daughter of Jamie and Carmen Shoemaker, and Ethan Woolcock, son of Jason and Bobbie Woolcock, were the recipients of the $1,000 scholarships.

The scholarships are made available rach year to Hughesville graduating seniors. Those wishing to be considered fill out applications, submit an essay and present their high school career history to the GHBA Scholarship Committee. The Committee considers students’ GPA, their essay and post high school plans, as well as their volunteer and other general activities throughout their school years. The members of the the Scholarship Committee this year are Lauren Davis, Eileen Newell, Roberta Phillips and Stuart Hague.

Ethan Woolcock plans on furthering his education at Messiah University. He said he has many good memories from Hughesville schools, but will really miss soccer. “I played defense throughout Junior Varsity and Varsity years–well, actually, I’ve played since I was a young kid, so, yeah, that would be one of the things I’ll miss,” Ethan says. Ethan plans to major in Psychology at Messiah.

Lillian Shoemaker credits great teachers for helping her throughout her school years. “I learned to overcome some situations and move around some obstacles,” Lillian offered. “And I’m grateful.” She’ll be furthering her education at Pennsylvania College of Technology, majoring in Biomedical Science, with an eye to move into the Physician’s Assistant Program after that.
