Baptist Church marks 175 years in Picture Rocks

PICTURE ROCKS — The Picture Rocks Baptist Church celebrates 175 years, having begun assembling Oct. 10, 1848. A partial look-back at its history finds congregates began meeting in the Woodley School house prior to erecting a building at the corner of Route 220 and Taylor Hill Road. The current edifice in Picture Rocks borough at 50 Elm Street, was constructed in 1884 during the first of an eight year tenure by the Rev. Henry C. Monro.
The lot for the current church was donated by the Asa Sprout family. This was a part of lands purchased by Sprout and Amos Burrows to establish the town, Seats, a donation toward the heating plant, and a bell was purchased with funds raised by the Willing Workers Society.
A waterfalls scene behind the baptismal tank was painted by Donald A. Sprout. The marbled pillars were painted by the late Marguerite Bierman.
Affiliated with the American Baptist Churches/USA, current Pastor Jerry Uppling affirms its mission, “To honor God by leading people to become fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ.”
Weeklong services now in progress began Sunday, Oct. 8, and will continue through Sunday, Oct. 15. Nightly, Monday through Saturday at 7 p.m., area pastors will be guest speakers. Special music will be provided by several vocalists from within the church family. The bell choir will present on Wednesday, Oct. 11. The event will conclude Sunday, Oct. 15 at 9:30 a.m., with the men’s quartet, “Redeemed,” a well-known local group.
Each service will be followed by a time of fellowship in the lower level, chair assistance available if needed. All are welcome.
